Venus Transits the Sun ~ June 5-6, 2012

Next week’s Lunar Eclipse is immediately followed by a rare astronomical event. Venus will cross the Sun and be seen from the Earth. This previously occurred on June 8, 2004. It happens again next week, visible from June 5-6, and won’t happen again until December 11, 2117.

The full transit will be visible from the western Pacific Ocean and adjacent lands. Viewers in North America will be able to see the start of the transit on 5 June until sunset, while viewers in South Asia, the Middle East, East Africa, and Europe except the Iberian peninsula will catch the end of it after sunrise on 6 June. The transit will not be visible in most of South America or western Africa. The regions from which it is visible are shown in the map below.
